From Singapore to Singaporean : The Bicentennial Experience
From Singapore to Singaporean: The Bicentennial Experience
What is From Singapore to Singaporean: The Bicentennial Experience? Is it an exhibition, or a show, or a movie, or a museum, or a theme park? It is all of the above and at the same time none of them. This centrepiece event of Singapore’s Bicentennial commemoration at Fort Canning Park is divided into two parts – a ‘timed experience’ inside the Fort Canning Centre, called Time Traveller and a ‘free and easy’ component at the top of Fort Canning Hill, called Pathfinder.
The Time Traveller is an immersive multi-sensory experience which takes the visitor on a 700 journey through Singapore’s history in 50 minutes. The Singapore Story is told through multimedia, sound, lighting, automation, water and other special effects, as well as, live performers.
The Pathfinder is a thought-provoking series of pavilions which takes visitors through Singapore’s place in the world across the centuries by using artefacts, maps, flora, the written word, augmented reality and interactive installations. The show kicked off on 1st June with the run ending on 15th of September 2019.
The challenge for the creative team was how to create an experience about the history of Singapore that will be exciting and engaging to a wide spectrum of visitors – from preschoolers through to seniors. This meant translating the well-researched and comprehensive historical materials, provided by the Singapore Bicentennial Office (SBO), into a 50-minute journey that was more visceral than cerebral. So, each Act offers the visitor a different sensory experience. There are altogether five acts within Time Traveller. Visitors kick off the ‘journey’ at the Atrium before being encompassed with the different acts.

Reflection by Musa
Our time on earth is but a speck of dust when viewed through the lenses of infinite time.
MUSA The Collective invites you to reflect on our human experience through eight musical movements in one multisensory evening of inspiration.
Reflections is an interdisciplinary music performance centred around the reality of life that everything in it is ultimately impermanent. Featuring life stories, the intimate and paradoxical nuances of our lives are captured and put on display, illuminating a complex truth that is interwoven with contrasts and contradictions.
Rooted in traditional Chinese music and possessing a contemporary style, MUSA is a trio comprising twins Clara TAN Su-Min (zhongruan) and Sophy TAN Su-Hui (guzheng), and composer/arranger Dayn NG. They are joined in this concert—conceptualised together with sound artist and multimedia designer Mervin WONG, playwright Isaiah Christopher LEE and voice-over artist Andy PANG — by an ensemble featuring keyboards, erhu, viola, cello and percussion.

Yellow: Rewritten: The world ahead of us
YELLOW, is motivated from Robert Yeo’s poem, “Those in Urban Yellow”. This selected writing speaks of how we should not take the greenery around us for granted, despite the vast number of heavily landscaped and curated parks in Singapore. Alas, there is at least hope for our future generations to appreciate “nature” presented before us today. This artwork seeks to engage viewers actively and encourage them to not only cherish the “now”, but to also, in the near future, share the responsibility of upkeeping this sometimes perceived “given”.
“And yet, some of your young opt out, niggling,
‘You are not green enough,’ They love, (you know),
Parks where spring contrives to give to green
A shine that does not yellow easily.
~
Few, few don’t know that green can be greener,
Or yellow, yellower. If we cannot choose,
Entirely, which flowers will grow wild on our soil,
We can, at least, graft blossoms for new homes.”
- Excerpt from Robert Yeo’s Poem – Those in Urban Yellow, 2012
YELLOW encourages people to look beyond today and anticipate a warm and positive post-pandemic future.
A visually impactful yellow skyline coupled with excerpts from “Those in Urban Yellow” will hopefully run a parallel or be symbolic of an irony to the visuals in the nature space. This will in turn highlight deeper meanings behind the written text, encouraging thoughts about looking at our home and our garden city we all enjoy today, in a different light.

The Fourth Trimester
The Fourth Trimester is a compelling new play that will sweep you into the vivid, messy embrace of parenthood and family life.
The first month is always the roughest.
Exhausted from battling sleepless nights and endless diaper changes, first-time parents Samantha and Aaron find themselves overwhelmed caring for their newborn. Close friends rally around them in support, but picture-perfect couple Lisa and Daniel are beginning to feel the strain of family life on their relationship, while Ann yearns for a space of her own. Next door, newlyweds Sofia and Johan deal with the pressures of starting a family. Faced with the tangle of life and its hurdles, ‘adulting’ has never seemed so complicated.
Incredibly rich, humorous and compassionate, The Fourth Trimester is achingly familiar in its portrayal of family life and all its uncertainties. With sensitive, nuanced direction by Claire Wong and insightful dramaturgy by Huzir Sulaiman, Faith Ng’s latest work casts a refreshing and timely light on parenthood, identity, and what it means to be happy in contemporary Singapore.
Expect the unexpected in this hopeful and heartfelt ode to the places we call home, and the people we choose as family.
The Fourth Trimester clinched Production Of The Year at The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards 2023.

Kwa Geok Choo
Everyone knows her as the wife of Lee Kuan Yew and mother of Lee Hsien Loong. But what do we know about Kwa Geok Choo?
This monologue follows her from girlhood and early romance to life as political wife and mother; and top conveyancing lawyer and main breadwinner of the Lee Family. It explores how it might have felt to be, as Lee Kuan Yew himself said, smarter than he but forever limited by gender to a secondary role.
After their secret marriage in Stratford-upon-Avon, Kwa Geok Choo and her husband were offered a law career in Britain with the promise of a comfortable private life for themselves and their children. Instead, they chose to return to overthrow the British. The life they returned to couldn’t have been easy, with death threats against her husband and his new political party, rioters on the streets and a child gone missing…
This is our tribute to the remarkable woman whose actions and influence are responsible for directing the waves, currents and tides that shape our lives in Singapore. It is a family love letter to all Singaporeans, in the hope that memories of Kwa Geok Choo, alongside those of our mothers, grandmothers and others who’ve passed on, will forever form the wellspring of our identity.

Harry Potter Exhibition
Good news, Potterheads – another Harry Potter-themed attraction will be heading to Singapore this year.
Harry Potter: Visions Of Magic is making its Asia debut at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) in late 2024, announced Warner Bros. Discovery Global Themed Entertainment and NEON in a press release on Wednesday (Mar 27).
In the interactive art exhibition, visitors can explore some of the most mysterious corners of the wizarding world, such as the Room of Requirement, Newt’s Menagerie and the Ministry of Magic.
And unlike the Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience, this exhibition has an indoor venue, which spans over 40,000 sq ft.
It will bring magic to life with multi-sensory installations and interactive technology, including responsive video content, bold architecture and original soundscapes.
Before coming to Singapore, the exhibition made its world premiere in Cologne, Germany in December last year, where around 138,000 tickets were sold before the grand opening. The Singapore edition is said to be even bigger, with an additional 10,000 sq ft of space.

Hard Mode
Adam has lived in Sengkang his whole life, and things don’t really change around here. Except nothing is quite the same anymore.
The indomitable Sengkang Squad – Adam, Rian and XY – have split up into different secondary schools, and it’s been pretty hard making new friends (they’re betas with no rizz?). K-pop stan besties Arissa and Maya have found community in the huge online fanbase, but somehow nothing’s as lonely as real life. With mounting pressures from parents, friends, school and their own expectations, they don’t feel like children any longer — but also no closer to being grown-ups. What exactly is this limbo stage called teenagehood? And where is the tutorial for being an adult?
A love letter to the perennial task of growing up and navigating the world, Hard Mode is essential viewing for anyone who has ever struggled with adolescence. Critically acclaimed playwright Faith Ng’s new work embraces the beautiful messiness of youth and friendship with her keen understanding and sensitive portrayal of life as we know it.
Dramaturg Huzir Sulaiman deftly sculpts this illuminating work while veteran director Claire Wong delicately brings this masterpiece to the stage with affirming tenderness and unflinching honesty. With a fresh, exciting ensemble cast comprising Chaney Chia, Izzul Irfan, Janine Ng, Kyra Lefebvre and Matthias Teh, Hard Mode confronts the joys, heartaches and adventures of coming of age.
